Final sketch

I began by attempting to use oil pastels, but it didn't turn out the way I hoped, so I decided to switch to colored pencils. I really wanted this piece to be bright and full of color. I incorporated a mix of warm and cool colors to show that my person has a creative, joyful, and colorful personality.

2nd Sketch

For this sketch, I used the drawings I made in my previous artwork. I started thinking about how my person loves to watch the sunset and how people connect her with ladybugs. I drew a hand and a ladybug to represent my character. Also, I included other ladybugs on the leaf, with her being the special one among all the ladybugs on the leaf.

Ideas

These are the sketches I used for my blind portrait. I had a bit of trouble coming up with ideas. I drew a girl with a face and a mask covering her to show how she struggles to make friends and feels different from her classmates. I also illustrated a book with a lock on it because she mentioned that she doesn't like being an open book, which got me thinking more creatively about concepts.

Artist Statement

This drawing reflects my feelings and the struggle I have in sharing them with others. That's why I created various facial expressions all in one piece, and I made it look like cracks were forming to symbolize that I can't keep my emotions bottled up anymore, like a flood of feelings. I really enjoyed how I shaded with the pen using thin strokes to give it a more realistic appearance, even though I don't often use a pen, I know how to handle it. One thing I would change is to make the flower darker so it stands out more, but aside from that, I really liked how everything came together. At first, I wasn't sure what to do for "Kill the pen", but I decided to dive deeper and make it more personal regarding this drawing. It was a bit challenging since I couldn't erase anything. Overall, I really had fun with this project.

Sketches

These are some of the drawings I did for practice I really liked how the fabric drawings turned out because it challenged me to make it look real. I love using charcoal so this was not new to me but the techniques I learn were. I learned  how to shade with white on black paper which is called reductive charcoal. This also helped me get out of my comfort zone and not draw only people.

Final

For my final charcoal artwork, I created a drawing of a person screaming with a blanket or sheet covering their head. This piece resonates with me personally. It expresses feelings of pain, frustration, and a sense of being lost, which I can relate to. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. The shading and highlights truly make it stand out. However, one thing I would like to improve is blending the colors better to achieve a cleaner and neater look.
